I am nearing completion of the two display kayaks that I am working on. A fabricator is making the stainless steel display stands and once they are delivered to me, I will be able to put the two halves of the kayaks together and get to sanding and varnishing.
On another note, I have just confirmed our booth at the Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show at the newest Trade and Convention Center in Vancouver, B.C. This will run the weekend of April 24th and 25th. I will be workinig on two different kayaks at the show as well as presenting a slide show at the main stage on Sunday on “Building your own Kayak”. More info can be found on their web site at

Things are progressing well on the two scaled down Kiska kayaks. Following a week in Mexico to celebrate a milestone birthday I was back at work in the shop over the holdiay season. By the end of 2009, the decks were almost complete and ready for fiberglassing. The deck designs are mirror images of each other and incorporate pinstriping of Peruvian Walnut (nogal) and yellow cedar.
Other projects in the shop include one customer building her own Skana kayak and a few restorations on cedar/canvas canoes.
In the new year, I hope to do some more work on the web site and add many more images to the gallery as well as to the main site.
Orca Boats has been commissioned to build two scaled down Kiska kayaks. The two kayaks will be matching, mirror image kayaks which will go into a new home currently being built by a prominent businessman in the UK. The home is in the West Indies. I will try to keep updates coming as the boats are built.
Well here it is. I was finally allowed to gain access to the airport and snap a few photos of the boat we built for the airport (front boat). Mark Reuten of Nomad Boatbuilding also contributed to the display with his skin on frame and lapstrake canoe. He also submitted an article which was feature in the August edition of Wooden Boat magazine.
Well, another year has come and our display at the Wooden Boat festival on Granville Island in Vancover, B.C. went well. I displayed 6 boats and we had a great response from onlookers. We had the largest on land display with three kayaks, one canoe, the Nutshell pram and a Skin on Frame kayak under construction. If you missed us, our next trade show is not scheduled until next spring. This will be the Vancouver Boat Show at B.C. Place, however it is later than most years since it has been bumped due to the winter olympics.
This coming weekend, dozens of small wooden boat builders will gather at Barnet Marine Park in Burnaby, B.C. to show of their boats, meet new friends and share ideas and knowledge. Anyone is welcome even if you don’t have a wooden boat. Check out my web site for more info. Hope to see you there.
